This tape was recorded in about a day and half and you can tell. There's a party atmosphere to some of the songs, and indeed the new decade was being rung in during its making. I doubt any of the participants expected the idea of The Dead Milkmen to last beyond this little project, let alone 9 more tapes plus a half dozen "real" albums. These songs were barely rehearsed and some sound like they were made up on the spot. (They were.) Those present were Joe (who "engineered" the recordings), his neighbor Garth, Garth's friend David (David was quite a talented pianist -- and still is -- and was the choir director at Garth's church), Joe's youngest brother Ben (who sang, shouted and giggled while sitting curled up under a desk throughout the sessions) and his sister, Mary Beth (who played trumpet and sang). It was conceived to be a comedy album more than a musical one. Fictitious engineers interrupt Jack Talcum to criticize his singing. Some songs are introduced as if the band is playing a live concert. It's a very odd tape and not a very easy one to listen to. That's why it is surprising that when Rodney heard it (Garth brought the tape into school after vacation and lent it to Rodney who was in his journalism class) he asked if he could join the band.
